Excerpt from The Golden Treasury of American Songs and Lyrics

Poets of America the names of over three hun dred native writers. American verse in the last half century has been extraordinarily prolific. It would seem that the time has come, in the course of our national literature, for proving all things and holding fast that which is good.

The fact that the title of this compilation instantly calls to mind that of Mr. Palgrave's scholarly collee tion of English lyrics need not prove a disadvantage to the book if the purpose which led to the choice of name is understood. The verse of a single cen tury produced in a new country should not be expected to equal the poetic wealth of an old and intellectual nation. But if American poetry cannot hope to rival the poetry of the mother country, it may at least be compared with it; and the fact of such a comparative point of view will aid rather than hinder the student of our native poetry in estimating its value.

How can a mere mortal address the possible rating of these collected works... Answer I can't. However, it is easy for me to say what a gift Amazon made available.. When I was a young reader I would often find the required reading at school to be almost unbearable so, my remedy was hanging out in the library safe from the doldrums of classroom propaganda and the jungle warfare voyage between classrooms. I learned how to protect myself from bullies through fast footwork and the gift of gab picked up in the loving arms of poetry. The other day while looking for some lyrics Amazon had this title as a gift which is priceless. I know I will continue to be a customer of Amazon for the foreseeable future. Thank you Amazon.

IT'S A MUSIC BOOK...THERE IS NO PLOT OR CHARACTERS!
This book contains mainly poetry and a few actual song lyrics from before the 1900s. A few of the poetry selections are from well-known poems; one or two song lyrics would be considered "somewhat well-known". My understanding of "Golden Treasury" would be things like folk songs or gospel songs that would be considered classics. These are neither. I was very disappointed with this collection.
An awful lot of verse, but very few meaningful song verses. The only one that came
even close to what I was looking for (words to music I have, or listen to on the radio),
was the Battle Hymn of The Republic. Most of the rest was blank poetry that I don't think ever
was put to music.
ts a treasure for any one who loves English poetry and wishes to read its evolution away from England. A pleasure reading contemporary american poetry evolved over the years
Very enjoyable songs with the lyrics we had a karaoke night which was a blast thanks. A really great show
This book is not what I expected. It is not a treasury of songs that we think of as familiar. Also it is printed poorly. Very light typewriter font that will not reproduce well in the copier and is hard to read in the book. It's misnamed and misleading in my estimation.
